Glossary
One of the things that I’ve often found frustrating about food blogs, recipe sites, and the like is that they tend to throw around a lot of jargon that perhaps the average (or even above average) home cook doesn’t know. As with so many other specialized fields, cooking comes with its own language. From ingredient names to techniques, there are tons of terms that permeate every kitchen and recipe, and the vocabulary calls on a variety of different languages starting with classical French and getting progressively more complex the more types of cuisines one strives to learn.
It is certainly true that we’re living in an age where the amount of knowledge to be gained about the culinary world is exponentially higher than it has been in the past. We can turn on a random episode of Iron Chef America and learn a little bit about things like cooking things sous-vide or obscure ingredients. Of course the internet is filled with pages and pages of information, from Wikipedia to any number of food-centric sites out there.
The aim of The Unreal Meal’s glossary is to try and help define things as much as possible in a manner that is the least condescending possible. As such, I don’t want to stop and spell out every term in every entry I post, but I do think that it will be a nice feature to have a link to definitions for things that readers might find unfamiliar. Yes, you can find them elsewhere, but since you’re here reading already, shouldn’t you be able to find them here?
This glossary is a work in progress, and suggestions are not only welcome, but encouraged!

The Unreal Meal is a budding food project that is dedicated to making every meal an unreal one, whether it be crafted from the most humble or the most exotic ingredients.
